Peter Cox Catering Manager with A Volunteer on the Buffet

Information for Volunteers – On Train Catering

We would just like to welcome you to the West Somerset Railway and in particular to the On Train Catering Department. The following is a brief resume of what is involved with helping with the On Train Catering Department. We do provide all volunteers with a detailed Information Pack once you have registered as a Volunteer

1 Timetable Trains

All trains in the Railway's Timetable have a Buffet / Bar Car which sell hot and cold drinks, pre-packed sandwiches and pasties, cakes, crisps, chocolate and sweets etc. plus a limited bar service. There are usually two volunteers on each Buffet so you would not be working on your own. We encourage you to travel with the rostered Buffet Crews until you are happy to be rostered as the second volunteer. The hours are usually from 9.30 am to about 5.15 pm and this involves 2 complete round trips of the line. Price lists are displayed around the Buffets and the tills are very simple to operate.

2 Special Trains

We run a number of Special Trains such as Fish & Chip Specials, Murder Mysteries etc. when we need a larger number of helpers to distribute the food etc. This does not necessarily involve working behind the Buffet but moving about among the passengers. These special trains are usually evening trains starting at about 6.15 pm and finishing at about 10.00 pm.

3 Party Catering

We do catering for parties booked on to timetabled trains providing them with food such as fish & chips, cream teas etc. This involves travelling for one round trip to lay tables and serve the food to the customers at their tables. The numbers involved vary from 15 to 50 and obviously for larger parties we do need a small team rather than one individual.

4 Dress / Uniform

We would expect all our Volunteers to be smartly dressed in black or navy trousers (or skirts / dresses for the ladies), white shirt for the men and white or light blue blouses for the ladies, black or navy blue ties for the men and black shoes (or navy shoes for the ladies). We will provide you with a name badge. You may purchase West Somerset Railway badges and items of clothing from the shop at Minehead Station with 10% discount once you become a Volunteer.

5 Who are we looking for?

We need conscientious and tidy volunteers who have a pleasant manner with the public. You should be reasonably fit and happy to work as part of a team and not suffer from travel sickness. You will find the work very enjoyable, meeting lots of nice people and be part of a happy and enthusiastic group of volunteers.

6 How do you join this happy band of Volunteers?

The first contact should be with the Catering Manager and details are below. The Catering Manager will then sort out some dates when you can come along to see what we do. If you happy and want to join us we will provide you with an Information Pack for On Train Catering Volunteers and explain the contents to you. After that, we will mail you with details of trains and dates and ask you to bid for any days you are able to help. You will then receive a Roster Sheet indicating the days / trains you have been allocated to work on and the name of your co-volunteer.

If, having read this, you are interested in joining the On Train Catering team, please contact the Catering Manager,
